WHAT WE DO
For centuries, stories have been used to help us learn. They help us see our and others’ mistakes and successes. They help us heal.
At Hypertext Magazine & Studio, we believe that creating art helps us understand our personal journeys and our world. As writers and teachers, we also believe in sharing our time, energy, and skills with community members whose stories have been silenced for too long. That's why we're dedicated to teaching writing and storytelling techniques to communities directly impacted by violence, people who are rebuilding their lives after being incarcerated, recovering from substance use disorders, or any underserved community whose collective voice has been marginalized in any way. These 'storytelling' skills translate directly to 'hard' skills including resume, cover letter, and email writing. Writing also develops critical thinking skills.
Hypertext Magazine opened its virtual doors in 2010 with the intention of promoting and leveling the publishing playing field for writers living and working in the Midwest (Chicago-focused but not exclusively). While this is still a guiding principal, we now publish writers from all over the United States as well as writers outside our borders.
We published our first print journal, Hypertext Review, in 2017 and are committed biannual print publications. To get rolling, we asked contributors and editors to donate their time and work but we are determined to pay creatives for this hard (and necessary) work.
These two journals – online and print – help us generate income to partially self-fund workshops for our social service clients. They also give us established platforms to publish social service clients' work.
